Automotive Interior Checking Fixtures: Balancing Surface Protection with Gap & Flush Inspection

Automotive interior parts cover plastic molded components such as instrument panels, door panels, armrests and decorative plastic covers, which impose dual inspection requirements on dimensional accuracy and surface appearance. On one hand, tight tolerances of hole positions, clips and assembly contours must be controlled to ensure precise fitting with vehicle sheet metal. On the other hand, surface textures and coatings of these parts are prone to scratches and indentations, so secondary damage during inspection must be avoided. Custom checking fixtures dedicated to interior parts feature optimized structural design tailored to plastic workpieces, satisfying both precision measurement and surface protection requirements simultaneously.

All datum contact areas of interior fixtures are fitted with soft polyurethane buffer pads. Locating pins, support surfaces and clamping pressure heads avoid visible exterior areas of workpieces; rigid metal datums only touch hidden non-assembly surfaces. Clamping force can be fine-tuned via cylinder pressure regulating valves to prevent plastic part deformation and surface scratches caused by compression. The fixture fully replicates the 3D profile of interior components and is divided into two functional zones: assembly inspection zone and appearance verification zone. Go/no-go gauges and sliding dial gauges are installed in the assembly zone to measure dimensions of mounting clips and fixing holes. Light-transmitting inspection windows are reserved in the appearance zone, allowing direct visual identification of molding defects including sink marks, color difference and warpage under natural workshop light.

Complete vehicle assembly requires ultra-precise control over splicing gaps and flush levels between interior parts. The fixture is equipped with multiple sets of adjustable gap gauges that simulate the splicing state with adjacent sheet metal and interior trims, enabling instant readout of gap values to judge compliance with vehicle assembly standards.Checking fixtures for large integrated instrument panels adopt segmented lightweight structures to reduce unit weight, allowing one operator to load and unload workpieces effortlessly and relieve inspectors’ labor burden. Compact fixtures for door panels and armrests are integrated with simple sliding rails for smooth workpiece loading and unloading, accelerating single-piece inspection to match high-frequency sampling cycles on production lines.

Plastic interior parts are susceptible to thermal expansion and contraction induced by ambient temperature fluctuations. A slight deformation compensation margin is reserved in fixture design; datum dimensions are calibrated under standard room temperature conditions. Temperature recording modules are also equipped to log ambient temperature in workshops with drastic temperature changes, assisting technicians in distinguishing dimensional deviations caused by workpiece thermal deformation from those originating from molding process flaws.Independent dust-proof storage cabinets are matched for fixtures to prevent grinding dust from adhering to workpiece surfaces and fixture datums, sustaining long-term measurement accuracy. Worn soft buffer pads can be replaced separately to cut maintenance costs.

During new interior part development, checking fixtures are used for full-dimensional prototype verification to rapidly identify molding deviations from dies and optimize injection mold parameters, shortening the mass production launch cycle of interior components. In mass production, they serve as standard inspection tools for incoming and finished goods, unifying quality acceptance criteria across the workshop and eliminating subjective discrepancies from manual visual inspection.

Nowadays, new energy vehicles feature increasingly intricate interior styling with a growing number of curved and special-shaped decorative parts. Custom interior checking fixtures are upgraded with multi-directional inspection modules to deliver both complex contour measurement and full surface protection, providing consistent quality assurance for premium assembly finish of complete vehicle interiors.
